I would do both. Get the 80 ohm and an amp. 250 Ohm "Pro" headphones aren't really designed for consumer use. Thats why it says pro. Your PC probably puts out 300mw at 32 ohm. Thats 32mw at 250 ohm. Fine for earbuds or iems. A little low but usable for 100mw headphones.

It really sucks that Beyerdynamic does not seem to sell black pads for DT 990; I just don't want to see the pads getting dirty and losing color I was actually considering between DT 990 Pro grey vs DT 990 Pro black. I'd either buy DT 990 Pro grey at $150 or DT 990 Black Special Edition at $199 (hard case + black ear pads).
they are far from harman or diffuse field target. some people are sensitive to higher treble or hate recessed mids. they don't work well with a lot of music. people tend to listen at high volume which makes the treble worse. I personally loved DT990 600 ohm for acoustic and metal music, soundtracks, movies and games.

Most practical is to just get an external headphone amplifier and plug it into the TiHD's RCA (analog) outputs. Made in China tube headphone amplifier, $50-$96. Fiio E9, $100. O2 (Objective 2) portable headphone amplifier, $155, works fine as a normal AC desktop headphone amplifier. Little DOT MKIII tube amplifier, $255.

The DT 990 Pro, without a doubt, requires an amp. These come in at an impedance of 250 ohms and a sensitivity of 99dB. This is the first headphone that actually required me to set my amplifier (JDS Labs Element II) to High-Gain. The Sennheiser HD 6XX was actually easier to drive than these, and so was the DT 1990 Pro.
