Jeep Cherokee XJ ('84 - '01): An entirely new concept when it was released as it was the first uni-body Jeep vehicle. It had no frame and the suspension was attached directly to the subframe. It also was the first coil spring Jeep with the same system copied to the TJ and the ZJ and later on transformed into the WJ, WK Grand Cherokee's. Just FYI: I am 47, have had 4 Cherokees and Grand Cherokees in my life. A '88 (Red) Cherokee Limited 4x4, '95 Cherokee Country 4x2 (married into this one), '01 Cherokee Sport 4x4 (lost it in divorce), and now a '02 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4. All have been trouble free. So far, GC '02 is the best of the bunch. All except GC '02 had I6 engine.
A bottle jack under the axle tube is the easy way to lift for a tire change. I use a HiLift jack. Most of a 42" HiLift will fit under the rear seat. I have the foot and lift mechanism in the spare tire well. To jack my WJ, I have the wheel attachment and carry a couple of compact jack stands.

This hahaha. Most reliable out of all other generations. If you’re just looking for a show and tell vehicle, Jeep ain’t it . Last year of production have most things worked out. So zj 98, wj 04, wk 10, wk2 21. Yeah, the WK ‘10 is supposed to be pretty reliable.

A note about used engines. From 2002 on things get sketchy in the 4.7L world. If the engine comes out of a 2002-2004 Grand Cherokee, it is a direct swap. However, there are two different 4.7L engines in the Grand Cherokees in those years. The standard 4.7L like the one in your 99, or the optional high output 4.7L.
A “Better” Grand Cherokee. For all intents and purposes, the WJ was truly “all-new”, reportedly sharing only 127 parts with the ZJ Grand Cherokee before it. Chrysler even saw fit to bestow the 1999 WJ with a new optional 235 horsepower V8 (4.7L). This engine replaced the outgoing 5.2L V8 that had previously served in its place.

Both lower and upper control arms are the same for the 1984-2001 and 2000-2001 Jeep Cherokee, respectively. The front stabilizer bar is interchangeable for 1994-2001 and the rear one for 1991-2001 models. Struts are swappable for 2014-2018 models for 4WD. Moreover, coils/air springs match for 2014-2016 models.
